Grading overview

The Grading module covers everything from defining how grades are calculated to issuing final transcript entries. As a teacher or academic administrator, you move through a structured workflow: configure a grading scheme, record student scores in the gradebook, submit grades for approval, and — once approved — let the system automatically generate each student's course outcome. Every step is auditable, and post-approval changes follow a controlled amendment process.

How grading works end to end

Each class (called a Course Offering) follows the same grading lifecycle:

Grading Scheme setup ↓Gradebook entry (grade items + scores) ↓Grade Submission (teacher finalizes) ↓Approval workflow (administrator reviews) ↓Course Outcomes created (transcript entries) ↓Grade Amendments (if post-approval changes are needed)

Key concepts

ConceptWhat it is
Grading SchemeThe set of rules that computes a student's final grade — including which grading scale and transmutation scale to apply
Grading ScaleA mapping of letter grades to numeric percentage ranges (e.g., A = 90–100)
Grading PeriodA subdivision of the academic period used to structure gradebook entries (e.g., Midterm, Finals)
Transmutation ScaleConverts a raw weighted average into a different display scale (e.g., a GPA-style value)
Grade ItemAn individual assessment within a grading period — quizzes, exams, activities, and more
GradebookThe per-class view where teachers enter and review scores for all grade items
Grade SubmissionA teacher's formal act of finalizing grades for a class/period and routing them for approval
Course OutcomeThe official transcript entry created once a grade submission is approved
Grade AmendmentA post-approval request to correct a single student's grade

Explore the grading module

  • Grading schemes, scales, and periods — Create grading scales, transmutation scales, and grading periods. Assign a scheme to a class.
  • Class gradebook — Add grade items, enter scores, publish results to students, and export the gradebook.
  • Grade submissions and approvals — Finalize and submit grades for approval. Track the submission lifecycle across all your classes.
  • Grade amendment requests — Request a post-approval change to a student's grade and track it through the approval workflow.
